Visit of Archbishop: The Archbishop greatly enjoyed his visit to our parish last month. He commented on the sense of welcome, and spirit of community he experienced. Some parishes he visited for Sunday Mass had congregations of 20-25 parishioners. Be in no doubt he said I want the laity to take their full place in a Vatican 11 Church. Two words from the Archbishop "DON’T PANIC". No doubt he will carry these memories with him as he continues to address the future of the Archdiocese.

Reorganisation of the Archdiocese: On Tuesday last 18th August, St. John Ogilvie’s hosted a joint meeting of PPC representatives from St. Cuthbert’s, St. Joseph’s, Our Lady’s Currie and St. John Ogilvie’s. Seventeen members of the PPCs from the four parishes were in attendance.

Decisions:

  • Agreed that all 4 parishes are active, vibrant and self-financing.
  • Should therefore seek to persuade the Archbishop that the 4 parishes should remain as separate parishes for as long as that situation can be sustained in terms of clergy and finance.
  • Meeting with the Archbishop to be held in St. Augustine’s or St. Cuthbert’s. These venues were chosen to accommodate possible numbers attending.
  • Time and date of meeting Saturday afternoon, we offered the Archbishop options on October 24th October 31st. or November 6th.
  • All four parishes are keen and committed to continue to support and grow their own local communities while also sharing in the joint effort.
  • The group will meet again at St Joseph's on 29th of October to formulate a presentation to the Bishop including the points added to the suggestion box by the parish.

Moira Wilson

It is with great regret and sadness that we have to advise you of the death of Moira Wilson on Sunday 2nd August 2015. Our condolences go to her husband Alan and to her daughter Margaret Mary, son-in-law Kenny and grandchildren Erin and Shaun and to her sister, Margaret.

Moira will be greatly missed in the Parish and in the community more widely. Her funeral will take place on Thursday 13th August with Requiem Mass here at 10.00am and thereafter at around 11.45am at Craigmillar Castle Park Cemetery.

May she Rest in Peace.

Welcome: Today at the 11.00am Mass we welcome Maya Anna Galuka to God’s Family. Congratulations to Ivan and Dominika Galuka, of Morvenside, Westburn, on the birth of your daughter. May she bring you much joy and happiness in the years ahead. (Note:This should be for next Sunday.)

National Youth Pilgrimage 2015: National Youth Pilgrim walk to Nunraw Sunday 13th September, 12 – 5pm from St. Mary’s Haddington to Nunraw. Mass will be at 3pm with main celebrant Archbishop Leo Cushley. For more information contact Irene.furlong@staned.org.uk.

Reorganisation of the Archdiocese: The consultation process about the reorganisation of the Archdiocese will begin in the autumn. Parishioners in all parishes throughout the Archdiocese are being invited to take part. Pat Saddler, Pastoral Parish Council Chair, will speak about this at our Masses during the weekend of 15/16 August. In the meantime, here is a brief reminder about what is proposed.

The Archbishop has decided that because of a forecast shortage of priests, the Archdiocese needs to be restructured from around 130 parishes into 30 or so parishes based on the existing parish clusters. St John Ogilvie’s is in a cluster with Our Lady, Currie, St Joseph’s, Broomhouse and St Cuthbert’s Slateford. For our interests, the Archbishop’s proposal is that these 4 parishes would be combined to form a single parish. The overall plan is that one of the churches in each cluster would become a “mother church” and the remaining parish churches would either close or be retained “for a time” as “chapels of ease” or Mass centres.

The Archbishop intends to start having meetings with each cluster in the autumn “to discuss the future of our structures with the people directly”. He will invite all the Catholics living in a given cluster to assemble “in a convenient location” for a very simple celebration of Mass, a cup of tea and a full discussion.

The Priests of our cluster have agreed to meet on 18 August at St John Ogilvie’s to consider what might be the “convenient location” and date to suggest for our cluster’s meeting with the Archbishop. Once these matters have been agreed, the details will be communicated through the Parish Bulletin.

Today is the 17th Sunday of the Year B
"The Bread of Life: hunger and Power"
(Prayers & Readings page 112)

Welcome: Today we welcome Fr Panagodage Lylie Jayanth Fernando from Sri Lanka. He will serve as locum at St John Ogilvie’s from 26th July to 15th August. To make it easy to remember his name he answers to Lylie (pronounced lie-lee). Lylie is an Oblate Priest currently residing in London where he is studying English Literature. Please make him welcome.

(Fr Tony will holiday in Ireland from 26th July to 14th August.)

Sunday Liturgy: Today and for the next few weeks, we interrupt our reading of Mark and turn to chapter 6 of the Gospel of John.

Today’s First Reading and Gospel are clearly related, recounting as they do, the feeding of 100 people with twenty barley loves on the instruction of the prophet Elisha and, far surpassing this wonder, 5,000 people with five loves on the instruction of Jesus. In each instance, there is considerable doubt beforehand:

  • "but how can?"
  • "but what are they among so many people?"

Each of us too, have our questions today:

  • "but how will we manage to make ends meet this month?"
  • "how will I get through this repeat exam?"
  • "how will I face these hospital tests?"
  • "how will I cope without him/her?"

Can we trust in a generous God to surprise us too?

Some advice: If you are too busy to laugh - you are too busy!

Parish Bingo: On break for the summer holidays.

What is a Week of Guided Prayer? A Week of Guided Prayer is an opportunity to develop your relationship with God by setting aside time each day to pray, and meeting every day with a prayer guide. Prayer guides will be available both daytime and in the evening.

As well as trying to pray for up to half-an-hour each day, reviewing how that prayer time went and meeting daily with your prayer guide, there is an opening meeting for all participants at 6.30pm on Sunday 26th July in the Lauriston Jesuit Centre

Parish Bingo: Unfortunately due to unforeseen circumstances the Parish Bingo must come to an end. Tuesday 14th July and Tuesday 21st July will be our last two nights of bingo. Whether this will be a temporary or permanent position will depend on decisions taken by the parish council and whether there will be parishioners willing to take it on. This has been one of the final social fund raising events in the parish which over the past 25 years raised a considerable amount of money.

Moira and Alan would like to thank all those members of the parish and local community for their support of the Parish Bingo over the years.

Twenty five years is a long time to faithfully manage the Parish Bingo. Apart from annual holidays, Moira and Alan could be depended upon, hail, rain or snow every Tuesday of the year to prepare the hall and welcome players to enjoy a social evening out. It was a good outreach to our brothers and sisters from other churches, and people from the Community of Wester Hailes/ Sighthill. Over the 25 years they contributed to church funds in excess of £75,000. Thanks to both of you and we wish Moira a full recovery to health.

Context in which YOU might read the Encyclical on the Environment: If you could fit the entire population of the world into a village consisting of 100 people, maintaining the proportions of all people living on earth, that village would consist of:

57 Asians 21 Europeans
14 Americans (North & South) 8 Africans

There would be:

52 Women and 48 Men
30 Caucasians and 70 Non-Caucasians
30 Christians and 70 non-Christians
89 Heterosexuals and 11 Homosexuals
6 people would possess 59% of the world's wealth - all from the USA
80 would live in poverty
70 would be illiterate
50 would suffer hunger and malnutrition
1 would be being born and 1 would be dying
1 would own a computer
1 would have a university degree

If we looked at the world this way, the need for acceptance and understanding would be obvious.

But consider again the following:

If you woke up this morning in good health, you would have more luck than one million people, who won’t live through the week. If you have never experienced the horror of war, the solitude of prison, the pain of torture, were not close to death through starvation, then you are better off than 500 million people. If you can go to your place of worship without fear that someone will assault or kill you, then you are luckier than 3 Billion people. If you have a full fridge, clothes on you back, a roof over your head and a place to sleep, you are wealthier than 75% of the world's population. If your parents are still alive and still married, you are a rare individual.

COUNT YOUR BLESSINGS and SHARE THEM WITH OTHERS.

When my grandmother got arthritis, she couldn’t bend over to paint her toenails anymore. So my grandfather does it for her all the time, even when his hands got arthritis too. That’s love. (Rebecca – age 8)

Laudato SI ("Praise be to You"): This is the first ever papal encyclical to concentrate on environmental issues. The Pope calls for a revised Catholic spirituality that centres on respect and love for the totality of God’s Creation; and he wants the Church to become a major player in global environmental politics.

The Pope acknowledges the debt he owes to his namesake, St. Francis of Assisi, who greeted the sun and the moon, the birds and the wind, as brothers and sisters. This was not madness: this was a profound insight into the beauty of Creation and how it reveals the mystery of God.

The Pope notes that a willingness to risk damaging the environment is often part of a sinful mindset that elevates the pursuit of profit above every other consideration.

The human community and the natural world will go into the future as a single sacred community or we will both perish in the desert.

Update from Archbishop Cushely: "In the autumn, I intend to start visiting our parishes, cluster by cluster, to discuss the future of our structures with you and your people directly. I hope to lay before you a timetable for these visits, to be mutually agreed between each cluster’s Parish Priests and me. The shape of the meeting in broad strokes, will be the same: an invitation to all Catholics living in a given cluster to assemble in a convenient location. I hope to have a full and positive exchange of views in order to build as complete a picture as possible of what we may be able to achieve at the cluster level. In this regard, you may wish to start considering where such a meeting might be held, cluster by cluster, and to consider a day (Mon – Sat) and a time that would be most convenient to you and your people. The office for Pastoral Resources will be in touch in the autumn, deanery by deanery, to organise the dates and venues."

Pope Francis: " There is no greater freedom than that of allowing oneself to be guided by the Holy Spirit, renouncing the attempt to plan and control everything to the last detail.

Whenever we encounter another person in love, we learn something new about God ….. we grow in the light of faith.
"

Sisters of St. Peter Claver

Every year, Missionary Orders are allocated parishes throughout Scotland for their annual appeal. In 2015 the Sisters of St. Peter Claver have been invited by the Archbishop to make an appeal in St. John Ogilvie’s.

The Sisters will be with us on the weekend of 2/3 of May when they will share with us about their work and will be grateful for your spiritual and financial support.

Music and Dance:  On Friday last we enjoyed an evening of entertainment and relaxation. An Irish Dance group, which includes Katie Hardie, performed jigs and reels plus some new high-kicking Michael Flately style of "Riverdance". Also our resident quartet played music from every era to suit all tastes. We are blessed to have these instrumentalists available to us. Recently I spoke with a parish priest who told me their parish paid £170 for a two piece band. I don’t think our minstrels even got a drink! Thanks especially to the ladies who provided an abundant and tasty buffet.

Income from the evening allocated to Parish maintenance and development came to £600.48.

The Oak Tree: Our Lady’s statue is back in place and we would like to thank Norman Gore for sourcing wood and making a new shelf for the statue. The wood is oak and is from a tree felled in Ainville, Kirknewton, so is local to this community.

Pope Francis: " The Church’s ministers must be merciful, take responsibility for the people, and accompany them like the good Samaritan, who washes, cleans, and raises up his neighbour. This is pure Gospel. God is greater than sin. The structural and organisational reforms are secondary – that is, they come afterward. The first reform must be the attitude. The ministers of the Gospel must be people who can warm the hearts of the people, who walk through the dark night with them, who know how to dialogue and to descend themselves into their people’s night, into the darkness, but without getting lost."

Parish Pledge: Envelopes for 2015/16 first instalment of "Parish Pledge" are available today at the back of the Church. The annual Parish Pledge replaces the old Autumn Fare for parish fundraising. The original concept was to pledge what you would have spent at the Autumn Fare. Our target is for £2,750 a year. Last year the income from this source was £3,415.

Stand Up for Life:
Join us for our annual Pro Life Chain!
You and I were BORN.
Let’s help those who are not yet born. Let’s help women to choose life.
Saturday next 25th April, 11.00am till 1.00pm Lothian Road.
Meet at 10.45am in front of the Usher Hall.
We will pray the Rosary at 10.00am in the Sacred Heart Church.
Also join us there in Lauriston after, for a light lunch.

The Laurel Tree: The Laurel tree to the left of the entrance to the Church has been taken out root & branch. The roots of the tree strangled the drain carrying the rain-water from the roof of the church, this resulted in a backing-up of water and seepage into the ceiling of the church.

If you have an nostalgic attachment to the Laurel Tree best not to take a leaf or cutting as laurels are poisonous. Birds never build their nest in the laurel, nothing grows under the laurel and there are historical legal cases of wives using the laurel leaf in place of a bay leaf when they wanted rid of their husbands.

Anniversaries: John Donoghue, Mark Smith, Frank Thomas, Margaret Ndangali, Charlie Ward, Emma Taylor, Marion Taylor, Rose Murray, Barney Brogan, John McGonagle, Cathleen Logan, Mary O’Rourke, Agnes Martin, Lena Montgomery, Agnes Drysdale, Robert McDiarmid, Stephen Hunter, John Evan Jones, Sylvia Monroe, John Hickey, Brian Slater, Darren Kyle, Jean Reid, John McGinness, David McKenna, Lydia Thompson and Agnes Parry.

We thank those members of our Parish Community who so generously give their time and talents to serve the community. The current situation of restructuring in the Archdiocese makes it more important than ever that we have committed and competent PPC members who will represent St. John Ogilvie's where and when decisions are being made. Thankfully we have such calibre in the current PPC.

Due to ill-health Alex Thompson has retired from the PPC. It was a joy to work with Alex. He brought great experience to the Council and was most generous with his time and talents. We thank Alex for his ongoing commitment and good humour while coping with chemotherapy and radium at the Western General. Connor Johnson has been appointed to take over from Alex the grass cutting in the Parish grounds.

Protection of Vulnerable Groups has taken a higher profile in the Archdiocese and throughout Scotland in order to meet all the requirements of meetings, training etc the March PPC meeting appointed John Rafferty as a second co-ordinator.

Pope Francis: Let each one ask him or herself today: "Do I increase harmony in my family, in my parish, in my community, or am I a gossip? Am I a cause of division or embarrassment?" And you know the harm that gossiping does to the Church, to the parishes, the communities. Gossip does harm! Gossip wounds.

Before Christians open their mouths to gossip, they should bite their tongues! To bite one’s tongue: this does us good because the tongue swells and can no longer speak, cannot gossip. "Am I humble enough to patiently stitch up, through sacrifice, the open wounds in communion?"

Mothering Sunday: " Mothering Sunday was originally a time when people returned to the church in which they were baptized or where they attended services when they were children. This meant that families were reunited as adults returned to the towns and villages where they grew up. In time, it became customary for young people who were working as servants in large houses, to be given a holiday on Mothering Sunday. They could use this day to visit their own mother and often took a gift of food or hand-me-down clothing from their employers to her. In turn, this moved towards the modern holiday, on which people still visit and take gifts to their mothers.
